Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Newly revised and expanded, this long-awaited 7th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks builds on the strengths of the earlier editions but adds significant new content—ensuring the continued relevance of this classic text.

This widely read global reference tool is one of the most authoritative sources for timely information on industrial minerals and rocks, the markets they serve, and their multitude of uses.

Changes in the global economy have greatly impacted the mining, processing, and marketing of industrial minerals. Additionally, the development of new technologies and a globalization of the customer base have driven fast-paced innovation in processing, packaging, transporting, and end use. The new edition examines these important and diverse changes and their complex ramifications in the world of industrial minerals and rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Includes an Outstanding Encyclopedic Overview of the Rare Earths   December 19, 2007

There is very much information packed into this volume, and my review is limited to the Castor and Hedrick chapter (pp. 769-792).

These two authors survey: REE abundances (upper crust and chondrite), the major REE-bearing minerals, REE production by nations in different years, major REE-producing sites on Earth, geology of major REE deposits, HREE concentrations (including La/Gd comparisons of major REE-bearing deposits), etc. Then they cover REE-prospecting methods, REE-mining procedures, REE extraction and processing (including helpful flow charts), economic factors (REE prices), REE usage, and a forecast for REE demand in the future.

Fantastic book to own as a reference. A lot of reading to be done...would have preferred a few photographs.

Excellent litterature.
