Product Description

The textbook is intended for the economic geologist who deals with the evaluation of deposits at an early stage of development. It offers rules for quick and easy calculations based on the application of approximate data. It provides both the student and the geologist in the field with a complete set of rules and methods enabling them to perform a quick initial evaluation of the deposit without the support of specialists or computers – even if he is left to his own resources. To support the "how to do"-approach all rules for calculations are illustrated with examples and also points out mistakes and pitfalls the authors encountered during their careers. The case histories, exercises, metal prices and terminology, especially concerning "reserves and resources", have been fully updated in this second edition. New chapters discuss topics including the life time of deposits, derivation of interest rates for the net present value (NPV) calculations, the influence of political risk and the evaluation of mineral prospects without known mineralization.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide to the Economics of Prospecting and Exploitation of Metals   June 30, 2008
Jan Peczkis (Chicago IL, USA)

This book presents much technical information, including sample calculations, that covers many aspects of metallic-ore exploration and exploitation. There are also helpful graphs and tables in the back of the book for such things as the conversion of one unit to another, determination of thickness factor in an ore when a hole is drilled an at angle relative to a dipping surface, gold prices, gold-size classification, etc.

Using this book, one can determine how many tons of ore are necessary to produce one ton of concentrate, the value of an ore consisting of many different metals, the optimal lifetime of an ore deposit, calculation of cutoff grades, and the economics of investment. A great amount of detail is devoted to the latter.

There is no mention of the prospecting and exploitation of the rare earth elements (REEs). Considering their importance in recent years, this is surprising.
